Here are some recent updates and news from the industry:

Canadian creators are earning global recognition as two Canadian short films have earned a 2026 Academy Award nomination, showing rising visibility for Canadians on the world stage.

On the film festival front, Telefilm Canada is investing in Canadian film festivals earlier in January 2026, boosting the exhibition ecosystem for Canadian cinema and short films.

As you all know, Industry data shows Canadian TV and film production dipped significantly in 2024 due to U.S. strikes and commissioning slowdowns. This is a pattern that has carried into early 2026. The slump particularly affected foreign service and local commissioning work. However, the industry still remains hopeful through all of this.

A slate of Canadian films, from genre to art house, are already lined up for premieres at major festivals (Sundance, Berlinale, SXSW) in 2026!

A few exciting calls are coming up:

The Comedy Igniter Challenge is closing up on Jan 29th. What a great way to bring a comedy short into life and maybe, even get some awesome prizes.

WIFT+ Showcase - Call for judges and applications by Jan 30th.

Canadian Society of Cinematographers - Call for 2026 awards submissions by Jan 31st (open to CSC Members worldwide & non-Member Professionals residing in Canada).

CFC The Norman Jewison Film Program opens this Thursday. A space for directors, producers, writers and editors to level up their craft. You can appy by Feb 26th.

Hot Docs is also seeking filmmakers to create short films for Citizen Minutes. You can submit by March 19th.
